Powerlifting

The Blues Fund has enabled me to continue doing the sport I love. I started powerlifting at the start of my second year and although it was quite daunting at the start, after six months of training I qualified to be a member of the Varsity Squad. The Fund has been invaluable in helping me reach my potential, as otherwise I would not have been able to purchase the equipment required to compete at the highest levels.

Although powerlifting is a solo sport, training buddies and squad sessions helped me to improve my form and also allowed me to make friends with students from across the University. The Oxford University Powerlifting Club was re-established in 2007 and has been going strong ever since. The Women’s Squad also qualified for the inaugural IPF World Championships, which is a great achievement which will hopefully inspire more women to pick up the sport.

Powerlifting has been relatively easy to fit around my studies because I sacrifice lie-ins in order to hit the gym. You form a sort of kinship with the rowers who also know the delights of early mornings.
