Without a doubt what I was doing outside of my course was just as important as the course itself, and this definitely reflected in how well my first year went for me; I had never felt so accomplished within a year as I had done before, both academically, socially and physically.

Gymnastics

Not long after arriving at Oxford to begin our studies, new students were subject to an enormous fresher’s fair. Here, we could see the large range of extracurricular activities the University had to offer.

While signing up for a truckload of sports and hobbies on offer, from underwater hockey to the Harry Potter Club, I found the Gymnastics Club. Despite having never officially done the sport, I had always loved jumping around... "Why not turn it into a skill?" I thought to myself.

I could not have anticipated how much I would love floating in mid-air, swinging and propelling my body around the various pieces of apparatus we use in the gym. After a long day of studying the physics of objects in freefall and the mathematics of lines and curves, it was fun to go to training later on and put it all into practice. Not much later, I found myself competing for the team in our annual Varsity Competition!

The club also provided a great source of friends and support in addition to my college, and in tough times it was nice to have somewhere to remove myself from worries and stress, and find a productive way to chill out and relax. Without a doubt what I was doing outside of my course was just as important as the course itself, and this definitely reflected in how well my first year went for me; I had never felt so accomplished within a year as I had done before, both academically, socially and physically. What more motivation do I need to push even harder next year, and make sure the rest of time spent at Oxford is an absolute blast!
